Good morning, Salem. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 21st of October.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USDA informed states that SNAP funding will not be available this November because the government shutdown continues and benefits will end after October 31—affecting more than 750,000 Oregonians. Oregon’s human services agency advised recipients to use local free food resources and stay informed about further changes.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Two Oregon immigrant rights groups, CLEAR Clinic and PCUN, sued federal agencies including DHS, ICE, and the Seattle field office on Thursday, alleging that detained noncitizens were denied access to legal counsel under constitutional rights and federal detention standards — a claim made amid a rise in immigration arrests in the mid-Willamette Valley.  Salem Reporter

HEALTH NEWS

  • A wastewater sample taken on Oct. 6 at a Marion County treatment plant detected measles virus, but the Oregon Health Authority said no cases have been confirmed locally. The authority alerted health care providers to monitor for possible infections (the detection may come from someone passing through) and reminded residents to keep up with their MMR vaccinations.  Salem Reporter
  • Salem Health Boulder Creek Medical Clinic will close after Nov. 14 due to its sale to Capital Neurosurgery Specialists—its 4,000 patients can follow five providers to other Salem Health clinics that have been notified of the change. The providers are relocating to clinics in south Salem, Dallas and Keizer, and Capital Neurosurgery will open its new neurosurgery service on Feb. 2, 2026.  Salem Reporter
