- ➤ Salem is celebrating Halloween and fall festivities this October with events hosted by the Police, Public Library and Parks and Recreation. Salem Police will hold a free costumed dress rehearsal at the Division St. NE station from 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 25 — families can also join a fun run at Riverfront Park, explore a teen-designed haunted house in the Library, contribute to a Día de los Muertos altar, and enjoy spooky storytime on Oct. 17. - ➤ Radio Poder has expanded to 24-hour broadcasts after gaining a full license from CC:Media, now airing about 25 original and syndicated shows for Salem's Latin American community. New director Vicky Falcón Vázquez, who has led the station since May, said the expansion — which is expected to double its annual budget — will provide more news and educational programs to local listeners. - ➤ Salem hosts a busy week of events from today until Oct.22 with a Light Treason show today at the Grand Theatre and a Saturday costume party featuring ghost hunts for thrill-seekers—while a fine art festival, horror movie series at Salem Cinema, vintage junk market, and a '90s tribute show round out the local offerings. - ➤ Photos taken on Oct. 15 showed trees changing to red, orange, and gold along Madrona Avenue SE, Minto-Brown Island Park and other spots in Salem — capturing the beauty of fall in the community. Statesman Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The federal government shutdown paused monthly employment reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics since Oct. 1, leaving Oregon's September jobs data unavailable. The Oregon Employment Department released QCEW data through June and will update local jobs news on Oct. 21, Oct. 23 and Nov. 19 — more details will follow when federal services resume. 1430 KYKN

- ➤ Starting October 15, people in Salem can use an upgraded Window Shopping tool on OregonHealthCare.gov to compare 2026 health plans, check if their doctors and prescriptions are covered, and see available savings—helping them get ready before open enrollment begins November 1 and runs through January 15. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ About 4,000 Kaiser nurses and health workers are on strike this week and are picketing outside a Salem clinic on Lancaster Drive to demand a 25% wage increase over four years—Kaiser said its clinics will stay open with extra help while some appointments and surgeries are being rescheduled.
