EDUCATION NEWS

  • Salem-Keizer School District said weapon detectors will be added to 12 middle schools for nearly 8,800 students this school year, with the first screenings set for late October and full implementation expected by April. The $1.2 million project will be funded with leftover tax money and funds from a Juul settlement + operated by current school employees.  Salem Reporter

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Foley Ridge Fire led authorities to close McKenzie Highway 242 and several popular campgrounds, trails, and recreation sites on the west side after the blaze reached 468 acres on Sept. 18. Lane County Sheriff's Office issued Level 2 Get Set evacuation notices for nearby areas—fire crews continue to work to contain the outbreak.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregonians will set their clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, gaining an extra hour of sleep — the change brings earlier sunsets as fall nears while officials wait for Congress to decide on making daylight saving time permanent.  Statesman Journal
  • Cherriots leaders will decide in November whether a proposed payroll tax on businesses should go to a public vote to fund expanded bus service. The board delayed the tax until 2027 amid strong opposition and will hold open houses—on Sept. 22 at Keizer Transit Center and Sept. 30 at Seymour Center—to gather community feedback.  Salem Reporter

HEALTH NEWS

  • West Coast Health Alliance released its first unified vaccine guidelines—advising all eligible Oregonians to get free COVID-19 shots, a flu vaccine for everyone over six months, and RSV shots for those at risk. Pharmacies began offering COVID-19 vaccines on Sept. 17, and state leaders said the recommendations aim to improve access amid federal changes.  Statesman Journal
  • Salem Clinic sent a letter saying it will stop taking most Medicaid patients starting Jan. 1, 2026 because it could not reach a new contract with PacificSource. The clinic will still offer obstetrics & gynecology care while PacificSource says discussions remain ongoing.  Salem Reporter

  • Salem’s real estate market shows resilience as commercial investors and home sellers adjust to ongoing economic uncertainty—lenders now offer competitive rates while tax incentives from H.R. 1 are expected to boost transactions.
