🎭 Culture
Salem residents will enjoy a busy week with the Oregon State Fair, a carousel car show, plus a free concert at Riverfront Park.
The events run from Thursday, Aug. 27 to Wednesday, Sept. 2 and bring local culture to life.
Flags across Oregon were lowered to half-staff beginning Aug.
25 at 6 p.m. to honor country singer Dolly Parton — who performed in Salem at the Oregon State Fair — following her passing at 80. Her music and philanthropy left a lasting impact on the community.
Famed singer Dolly Parton performed at Salem’s Oregon State Fair in 1990 and visited Willamette University twice in the 1980s.
She thrilled a crowd (9,000 fans attended) and later a donation check for $40,000 helped update campus equipment (supporting athletic programs).
🎓 Education
On Aug. 25, 330 teachers from 42 schools trained at West Salem High (a local venue) to learn the new Houghton Mifflin Harcourt literacy curriculum.
The district will spend $11 million to improve reading instruction for thousands of students in Salem-Keizer Public Schools this school year.
🌲 Environment
Oregon Department of Environmental Quality reopened the Clean Vehicle Rebate Program on Tuesday, offering $1,500 to $7,500 for eligible electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to help reduce fossil fuel emissions.
Applicants must apply until Wednesday, Nov. 4 (11:59 p.m. PT) while funds last.
🏛️ Government
Oregon officials honored Dolly Parton on Aug.
25 by ordering flags flown at half-staff and celebrating her Imagination Library—giving free books to young children statewide. The permanent law signed in June ensures her legacy lives on across the community.
Brooks Community Service District will consider a 10-year, $450K water deal with Chemeketa Community College today to secure raw well water for its upgraded drinking-water system + new reservoir and extensions.
The intergovernmental agreement is part of broader infrastructure improvements.
