- ➤ Salem-Keizer Public Schools has appointed new principals at two middle and 11 elementary schools — 18 new assistant principals and three district administrators will take over when classes resume after Labor Day. - ➤ Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read rejected a request from the U.S. Justice Department to share voter data—citing concerns that releasing personal details like birthdays and driver’s license numbers would violate privacy rights. He said that while public voter lists are available for a fee, they do not include sensitive information. Salem Reporter
- ➤ A Guatemalan farmworker was arrested by ICE on Aug. 7 during a Hubbard farm raid and is now challenging his detention in U.S. District Court in Portland. His lawyer says he followed scheduled check-ins—filing for asylum while awaiting a removal hearing in November—and argues that ICE did not follow proper procedures. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Salem’s new expungement clinic—Willamette Valley Clear Path—cleared records for 40 people on August 15, helping them remove barriers to jobs and housing as part of a state-funded initiative led by the Public Defender and community partners. Organizers will hold the clinic monthly and plan to extend the service to rural areas in the future. Salem Reporter
- ➤ On Aug 18, the Keizer City Council voted unanimously to oppose a payroll tax proposed by the Cherriots board to expand local bus service—business owners said the new tax could burden small companies. - ➤ Oregon lawmakers will hold a public hearing Monday at 3 p.m. for feedback on Governor Tina Kotek’s transportation funding proposal that includes a 6 cent gas tax increase—part of a plan expected to raise $791 million over the next two years.
