Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 13th of August.
Good morning, Salem.
Marion Polk Food Share’s Youth Farm ended its best season yet as 33 teens harvested vegetables and prepared sheet-pan pizza for families on Tuesday, August 5.
The program provided produce for 120 families and added Santiam Hospital as a clinic partner—helping to expand food access and teach agriculture skills to local youth.
Salem city councilors unanimously approved sending an evaluation form to council members and the executive team to review Interim City Manager Krishna Namburi’s performance, with a summary of the feedback to be reviewed in September to decide if she will be permanently appointed.
The council also approved a supplemental budget to add $230,000 for senior center programming and allowed Namburi to apply for a $1 million grant to install solar arrays on the Marion Parkade renovation — measures aimed at addressing budget challenges and public service needs.
On Tuesday, the federal appeals court ruled that the class-action abuse settlement must now include foster youth living with their birth parents—covering an estimated 600 to 700 children.
The decision follows a report from a court-appointed expert outlining timelines and oversight measures for Oregon’s foster care system.
