ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Salem Fire Department responded to a two-alarm vegetation fire on East Nanitch Circle in rural Marion County on Aug. 5; nine units (including four brush rigs and three engines) arrived after the fire was first reported at 3:09 p.m. Statesman Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The seventh annual Englewood Forest Festival will begin on August 9 at Englewood Park at 1260 19th St. N.E.—offering a live falcon demonstration by Chintimini Wildlife Center, craft workshops, and music and dance performances. More than 80 local vendors and over 50 artists will share family-friendly activities and educational exhibits in a free, daylong event. Salem Reporter
- ➤ The 160th Oregon State Fair will open Friday, August 22 and offer savings including $5 admission, free parking with select purchases, and discounted pre-sale tickets. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Church at the Park pitched a new program called Clean Start to hire three unhoused people to clean downtown and gain work experience. The plan—first proposed in 2022 and re-presented on July 21—asks for $120,000 in start-up funds and $345,000 a year for equipment, a vehicle and a hotline. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Oregon state agencies urged Salem residents to practice wildfire prevention as they head into peak wildfire season this August and September + follow local fire regulations. Officials said residents should prepare an emergency kit and review local campfire bans to help reduce fire risks + stay informed through local alerts. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ Oregon leaders agreed to expand the trial defense team to add more state-employed lawyers for handling complex criminal cases. Gov. Kotek approved a 14.8% budget boost last July — the trial division now works in Salem, Portland and Medford — and a 2026 report will evaluate both contractor and state-employed lawyer performance to guide future changes.
