  • Get Simple Box has expanded its yard on Portland Rd NE in Salem, offering container sales, rentals, and transport services with a small, local team. CRIME NEWS

  • On August 4, 34-year-old Nicholas Contreras-Salmion was sentenced in Marion County Circuit Court to eight years and four months in prison + three years of post-prison supervision after he threatened two Woodburn stores with fake explosive vests during attempted robberies.  Statesman Journal

  • Bentley Michaels celebrated his 3,000th performance at the Enchanted Forest Theatre on Aug. 1 and marked a milestone that began when he was still in high school in 2000. He now works with young performers and continues to show his passion for acting at the theatre.  Salem Reporter

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Salem and Albany St. Vincent de Paul stores now offer free mattress drop-offs under Oregon’s Mattress Stewardship Program to reduce landfill waste and illegal dumping — the program, which began in January and is funded by a $22.50 fee on new mattresses, makes recycling more accessible. The Salem store on Lancaster Drive accepts up to 10 mattresses daily from individuals between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and mattresses in good condition may be sold or donated.  Salem Reporter
  • On July 30, the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors sued Oregon, alleging that the Recycling Modernization Act is unconstitutional because a private nonprofit sets fees. State Sen. Janeen Sollman said the law—passed in 2021 to shift disposal costs from residents to producers—is designed to make waste disposal fair and protect local costs.  Oregon Capital Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Bureau of Land Management will offer eight timber sales in August totaling 58.5 million board feet across 2,223 public acres in western Oregon—sales designed to supply construction needs and support local jobs. In Salem, the Northwest Oregon District will accept bids at 9 a.m. on August 27 for three sales in Marion County while other districts in Coos Bay, Medford, Springfield, and Roseburg hold sales later this month.  1430 KYKN
