  • Eleazer and Cynthia Lara, owners of Bison Dump Hauling and Junk Removal, received the New Business of the Year award from the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce earlier this year. CRIME NEWS

  • A Keizer man, 28-year-old Caden Jay Christman, was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison and five years’ supervised release yesterday for trafficking over 17 pounds of fentanyl and methamphetamine in Oregon and Washington — law enforcement raids on his vehicle and home uncovered drugs, cash and firearms.  1430 KYKN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chemeketa Community College announced that President Jessica Howard has been named Chair of the Campus Compact Board of Directors, a national nonprofit that advances higher education's public mission. Howard will now lead a board of education leaders as the organization continues its work to empower student and community engagement.  1430 KYKN
  • Twelve schools in the Salem-Keizer School District will have new principals for the fall term, with most changes affecting elementary schools and only Waldo Middle School seeing a leadership shift. School officials said some principals are being promoted, transferred, or moved into district roles as detailed in the district announcement.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Business owners met with Cherriots leaders on Thursday to voice concerns and ask questions about a proposed payroll tax on Salem and Keizer businesses that would start in January. The tax—if approved by the board this fall—would be set at 0.007% of payroll and is expected to raise about $39 million to improve bus service.  Salem Reporter
  • Cherriots proposes a .7% payroll tax on Salem-area employers—costing a business with a $500,000 payroll about $3,500 a year—to raise an estimated $39.4 million annually starting January 1 for expanded bus service, and the board will consider the tax in the fall as local business leaders express concerns.  Statesman Journal
