The Statesman Journal won 12 awards in the PNW Newspaper Contest for its 2025 stories and multimedia.

The awards were presented on July 24 at the Salem Convention Center by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, honoring exceptional work in feature writing + sports reporting + multimedia + photography.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools will start using Edustaff to employ substitute teachers and staff this fall.

Approximately 1,200 substitutes for teachers, aides, and custodians can apply through Edustaff (as announced outside Sprague High School on July 21).

Using a $1 million grant from Willamette Health Council, the Mid-Willamette Valley Homeless Alliance will place a shelter navigator in the ER and assign a nurse to local shelters — to improve coordination and keep homeless patients safe after discharge.

Westwood Homes LLC has proposed a 61-home subdivision in the 4200 block of Strong Road SE in south Salem with 49 detached houses plus 12 townhouses; planning staff are reviewing the application after public feedback on traffic, tree removal + neighborhood impacts, with a written decision expected after further review.

Hundreds of local kids attended Hoopla’s Free Kids Clinic led by Salem Capitals owner Jason Conrad on Court Street from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, where local high school and college players taught basketball skills.
