- ➤ Avelo Airlines confirmed on Monday morning that it will end flights out of Salem Airport on Aug 10—its decision follows canceled passenger emails and the closure of its Burbank base effective Dec 2. - ➤ A 17-year-old boy was arrested last Friday at an apartment near Southeast Park Court for firing a loaded handgun during a June 30 shootout at a south Salem McDonald’s on Commercial Street S.E.—he faces charges including attempted first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangering and unlawful possession of a firearm. - ➤ State lawmakers approved a nearly $19 million, 30% budget increase for the labor bureau, which will hire about 50 new investigators over the next four years to ease a backlog of wage and civil rights claims. The agency will end a policy of prioritizing claims by income by the end of this year—aiming to better protect all workers. Oregon Capital Chronicle
- ➤ Kaitlin Lovell, a scientist and lawyer from the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, was unanimously appointed by the State Land Board to lead the Department of State Lands and will begin her four-year term in early August—she will manage 130 staff, more than $116 million in budget, and roughly 680,000 acres of state lands. - ➤ Oregon will receive $10.1 million for opioid prevention and recovery services as part of a nationwide settlement with eight opioid manufacturers.
