Good morning, Salem. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of July.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alex and Andrew Hussey have run Salem’s Historic Grand Theatre with their company To the Ceiling for over a year and signed a new three-year lease to boost live music and diverse performances downtown—plans include using the attached ballroom for smaller acts to create one central hub for local entertainment.  Salem Reporter

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After months of talks that nearly led to a strike last year, Salem-Keizer union and district leaders reached a $38 million contract that gives 2,400 teachers a 4% raise this school year and a 3.5% raise next, along with extra training days and revised extra duty pay. Union members will vote on the contract next week before it is sent to the school board for approval (the contract covers the next two school years until June 30).  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers passed bills giving Governor Kotek more power to hire and fire state agency leaders for the Department of Forestry and the Public Defense Commission—bills that await her signature. Another measure gives her authority to name a replacement for a vacant U.S. Senate seat.  Salem Reporter
  • Members of SEIU Local 503 picketed at over 50 sites on July 10 to ask for better work rules and fair treatment during bad weather and layoffs—part of ongoing contract talks over state workers’ rights. In Salem, union members chanted outside the Oregon State Library where Governor Kotek’s office is located—adding a local voice to the state effort.  Statesman Journal
  • Salem taxpayers who have not filed their 2024 returns are urged by the Oregon Department of Revenue to file as soon as possible before the extension midpoint on July 15+ Director David Gerstenfeld said that filing early—even if payment in full is not possible—can help reduce penalties and interest.  1430 KYKN
  • On July 9th, Cherriots earned zero findings in major oversight reviews by the Federal Transit Administration and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
