COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Geer Park soccer fields are being rebuilt with voter-approved bond funding, with the parking lot closed starting June 23 and work scheduled through October 1, though pedestrian paths will keep the park open. The project also includes improvements to create a new fenced dog park plus upgrades such as artificial turf on baseball infields and a $4.54 million skate park in progress.  1430 KYKN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sikh community members from around the world will join an annual parade in Salem on Sikh Day to celebrate their traditions (organizers expect a strong turnout).  Statesman Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After cutting 90 positions last year, Silver Falls School District has adopted a budget that will add 7 new staff for the 2025-2026 school year. The new budget raises funding to $83.8 million—with an extra $3 million from the state—to support benefits, special needs programs, and facility improvements at 13 schools in and around Silverton.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders will present a report to the council tomorrow on the contract with Avelo Airlines after weeks of protest over its deportation flights—City Attorney Dan Atchison warned that ending the agreements could trigger legal penalties and cost the city federal grant money.  Statesman Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A CDC study shows Oregon is ranked as the third worst state for hepatitis C deaths with a rate of 6.76 per 100,000 people and residents are 2.7 times more likely to die from the virus. The Oregon Health Authority said hepatitis C is a leading preventable cause of death and is pushing for more screenings and treatment—steps to reduce the spread of the disease.  Statesman Journal
