CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Three 17-year-old boys were arrested by the Marion County Sheriff's Office after an 11 a.m. shooting on Wednesday in east Salem—detectives continue to investigate the incident after bullet casings and a white truck were found on Northeast Silverton Road. Salem Reporter

- ➤ The Oregon State Fair announced its 2025 concert lineup featuring 11 artists such as The All-American Rejects, Sean Paul and The Beach Boys with concerts scheduled from Aug. 22 to Sept. 1 at the L.B. Day Amphitheater. Tickets for reserved seats go on sale today at 9 a.m. — seats are limited— and fairgoers can attend concerts free on a first-come, first-serve basis. Salem Reporter

- ➤ Twelve educators from Salem and Keizer were honored with the 2025 Crystal Apple awards on Thursday at the Salem Convention Center—recognizing their efforts in school support including early van pick-ups, leading clubs, and assisting families in need. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Tina Kotek announced on Wednesday that the new Oregon Environmental Restoration Council will invest $698 million from a Monsanto settlement over the next 50 years to restore water quality and support affected communities. The council—co-chaired by Chuck Sams and Michael Dembrow—will divide funds with 50% going to state agencies, 25% to federally recognized tribes and 25% to local groups. Oregon Capital Chronicle
- ➤ Salem city officials began an investigation after soil samples at Salem-Willamette Valley Airport showed PFAS—forever chemicals used in firefighting foam—in areas used for training and development. The study will cost $50,000 initially and will check risks to firefighters and airport staff while state and federal agencies work with the city. Salem Reporter

- ➤ City services will move on June 2 to temporary locations while the Civic Center undergoes an 18-month seismic retrofit funded by a 2022 voter-approved Community Safety and Livability Bond — the upgrade ensures safe building exits during earthquakes — and some services, including the Salem Municipal Court and Customer Service Center, will relocate in early July. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ Salem’s budget committee unanimously approved an updated budget proposal on Wednesday that restores library hours, parks, and Center 50+ jobs—avoiding the cuts that were expected if voters had rejected the property tax increase. Interim City Manager Krishna Namburi said the plan restored 45 jobs and added three library positions—using new revenue to keep the services running into the next fiscal year. Salem Reporter
- ➤ On Tuesday, Salem City Council approved a six-year strategy to boost affordable housing with 17 proposals (including faster permits, expanded tax breaks, and federal funds to help first-time homebuyers) to address affordability challenges. Councilor Shane Matthews’ amendment passed 6-2 (it revises zoning codes for quicker approvals) and the city will track progress with annual reviews and a state report due in 2029. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Oregon Housing and Community Services and BuildUp Oregon have committed $7.4 million in grants and loans to nine projects that will combine early care with affordable housing—these projects are set to create or keep 542 child care spots by leveraging an extra $20 million in public and private funds.
