- ➤ The West Salem Jazz Combo, a student-run band, won first place at the state contest on May 9 and will perform with middle school jazz bands and the high school group on Friday, May 29 at Straub Middle School; tickets cost $5. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Today at Oregon State Plaza dedication, the state's nine federally recognized Native American tribes joined a ceremony honoring local heritage — a significant cultural celebration. Statesman Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Registration is open for the 2026 Oregon 4-H Wagon Train, a weeklong living history program scheduled for July 12-18 along historic Barlow Road with a Tune-Up Weekend on June 6-7 at the Oregon Outdoor Education Center in West Salem, where youth, families and volunteers learn pioneer skills without prior experience. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Officials plan to study and preserve Salem’s oldest street tree before its removal begins in late June or early July. Urban forester Milan Davis said parts of the tree will be shared with community groups for research (and art projects) and to collect heritage acorns. Statesman Journal
- ➤ Oregonians will see a rare blue micromoon on May 31 at 1:45 a.m. PDT; this calendrical full moon appears smaller as it reaches apogee and only happens every few years. Statesman Journal
