The Turnaround Achievement Awards honored 23 students from Salem-Keizer schools in a Thursday ceremony at the Keizer Civic Center.
Teachers and administrators nominated students who overcame academic struggles and turned their performance around — local nonprofit Valor Mentoring helped present the awards.
Salem’s budget committee will meet on Wednesday, May 28 at 6 p.m. to discuss restoring cuts to the library, Center 50+ and parks after voters approved a new tax levy that charges about $220 per home yearly.
The levy is expected to bring in $14 million this year—funds that will help improve library hours, senior center services and park maintenance.
Oregon lawmakers, including Salem rep Kevin Mannix, are working on a plan to replace the current Climate Protection Program with a market-based cap-and-trade system that will pay for roads and bridges.
Transportation co-chairs Sen. Chris Gorsek and Rep. Susan McLain said they will share more details soon—using polluters' credits to fund transportation projects.
