  • Punx With Purpose opened Stormie’s Place on May 20 in downtown Salem at 333 High St. NE near the transit center. The center offers food boxes, clothing, hygiene supplies and a safe space for youth aged 11 to 18 — and its staff plans to expand by hiring five new employees while hosting Punx in the Park on Aug. 31.  Salem Reporter

  • Gamberetti’s Italian restaurant, a Salem favorite for over 15 years, is moving from Pringle Plaza to The Holman Riverfront Park Hotel and will offer a larger kitchen with an expanded menu including breakfast service from 6 to 10 daily starting June 2.   • A Salem woman aged 20 was arraigned in Benton County court on May 21 for shooting a man near Corvallis early May 17 after luring him using a dating app—she faces charges including attempted murder and assault while police continue looking for a second suspect.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon lawmakers are reviewing a pending bill that would set a minimum wage for rideshare drivers — the proposal also requires a just cause for deactivating driver accounts and includes paid sick leave. Uber and Lyft oppose the measure, saying it could raise fares and reduce drivers’ flexibility.  Salem Reporter
  • Oregon lawmakers are planning a new market-based emissions reduction program—allowing gas and diesel polluters to buy and trade carbon credits to fund road repairs. Legislators said the proposal would replace the current Climate Protection Program and that a workgroup is set to meet soon.  Oregon Capital Chronicle

  • A certified Medicare counselor in Salem explains that eligible beneficiaries can lower drug costs and premiums by enrolling in three programs—Medicare Extra Help, Medicare Savings Program, and QMB.
