COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salem will host many summer events that include a Pride Parade (June 7), Make Music Day (June 21), and World Beat Festival (June 27-29) featuring music, food, and community celebrations. Other events such as Marion County Fair, MIG Fest, Ironman 70.3, Hoopla, Englewood Forest Festival, and Salem Art Fair are scheduled through September to highlight local culture and fun.  Salem Reporter

CRIME NEWS

  • Salem police arrested a 16-year-old suspect on May 8 around 9:30 p.m. outside a northeast Salem home after he stabbed two young men during a fight near The Cue Ball pool hall (1262 State St), leading to the death of 21-year-old Isac S. Rizo at Salem Hospital and non-life-threatening injuries to a 20-year-old man, with the suspect now facing multiple charges.  Salem Reporter

  • Oregon Rep. Janelle Bynum will hold 10 town halls over the next three months to let voters share their concerns about rising costs and government policy. The tour—comprising 7 in-person and 3 telephonic meetings across Clackamas, Deschutes, Linn, Marion and Multnomah counties—kicks off today at Sisters High School.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Former Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan must pay a $3,600 fine after an ethics commission found she used her position to secure a consulting gig for a marijuana company and receive extra travel reimbursements—Fagan resigned in May 2023 and apologized for her actions.  Oregon Capital Chronicle
  • Salem Reporter spent two hours at the Willamette Valley Communications Center to show how local dispatchers handle about 1,500 calls daily from a 2,000 square mile area covering over 415,000 people — the center uses new tools like 911 texting and video calls to help guide emergency and non-emergency responses. The report explained that the city recently expanded its service to include three Lincoln County agencies and detailed the training and work needed to keep the service running.  Salem Reporter

HEALTH NEWS

  • A report from the Secretary of State’s Office finds that Oregon’s crisis response is strained due to poor data collection and unfunded crisis stabilization centers + only the 988 hotline has steady funding, leaving many without needed mental health care. Officials noted that these issues contribute to high suicide rates and unmet service needs across the state.  Salem Reporter
