- ➤ Salem leaders are asking residents to share experiences of discrimination and belonging in a survey offered by the Human Rights Commission and Western Oregon University, open through May 12. The anonymous survey takes 5-10 minutes and is available in English, Spanish, Chuukese, and Marshallese. Statesman Journal
- ➤ Nine-year-old Zoey Harper helped save Salem Public Library by testifying for its funding in May 2025 and now continues her civic work by hosting forums and asking questions at public meetings today — a bright sign for community involvement. Salem Reporter
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Schreiner’s Gardens opened yesterday with blooming irises and family activities planned throughout May in Salem. The historic site has celebrated its tradition since 1925 + continues to offer seasonal events for visitors. Statesman Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Detroit Lake reached its full pool on May 8 (1,557.5 feet) despite a dry spring, and the full reservoir will boost summer recreation and water supplies for Salem. Hot weather and little mountain snow may lower levels by mid-August, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Statesman Journal

- ➤ Veterans Affairs officials held meetings April 30 at Salem Public Library to present plans for a 307-acre cemetery at 3515 Howell Prairie Rd S.E., 10 miles southeast of downtown.
