COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marion Polk Food Share purchased a 100,000 sqft warehouse on Industrial Way N.E. to double its food storage and expand the Meals on Wheels kitchen. Renovations costing about $11.1 million are slated before a fall move, and the food bank currently serves 600,000 meals monthly.  Salem Reporter
  • The City of Salem’s Human Rights Commission and Western Oregon University have launched the annual Community Belonging Survey to ask residents about discrimination and their sense of belonging. The anonymous survey is open now through May 12 and is available in several languages.  1430 KYKN
  • Salem Reporter spotlights this week’s events: a skate dance lesson on May 8 at 1335 Madison St. N.E. and a fundraiser walk to support Eco-Earth renovation on May 9 at Riverfront and Wallace Marine Park. A Mother’s Day brunch will be held on May 10 at The Yard Food Park.  Salem Reporter
  • Salem Main Street Association is raising money to install flower baskets downtown this summer and support a youth work program (with local partners) by encouraging 80 sponsors to contribute $500 each, with further details on locations and work to be shared soon.  Salem Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Andrea Castañeda presented a $1.12 billion budget proposal that finalizes $23 million in cuts for the 2026-27 school year as enrollment declines prompt adjustments. Some high schools will lose elective courses and teachers will be reassigned to core subjects while the budget committee reviews proposals in the coming weeks.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon State Marine Board and Oregon Department of Emergency Management remind boaters in Salem to check water conditions as low levels and cooler temperatures may affect weekend activities. Boaters are advised to monitor local updates (via local reports) before venturing out.  1430 KYKN
  • The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs will host Oregon’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, May 25 at the Oregon State Capitol State Park in Salem, honoring fallen service members with remarks, a color guard and ceremonial elements.   • Gov. Tina Kotek and fire officials warned today that Oregon may experience a challenging wildfire season — communities should prepare for unpredictable conditions.  Statesman Journal
  • Xicha Brewing said it had not approved a Cinco de Mayo campaign event by Rep. Ed Diehl — the candidate moved his event to a nearby rental space. The Latino-owned business stressed it does not host political events at its North Salem site.  Salem Reporter
