COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Head Start staff marched through Riverfront and Wallace Marine Parks on Tuesday to mark Child Abuse Awareness Month — teachers, classroom assistants and other staff from the community action agency joined the walk to raise awareness about child abuse. A car parade will begin Friday at 7:30 a.m. at the Oregon State Fairgrounds pavilion parking lot — local groups will gather at the police station for brief remarks on the issue. Salem Reporter
- ➤ This week, Salem has several events scheduled—Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 include the Mid-Valley Comic Art Expo at the Jackman Long building with panels, cosplay contests and pop culture trivia, and Saturday, April 5 features a Qingming ceremony at Pioneer Cemetery with traditional music and a proclamation from Mayor Julie Hoy. Friday, April 4 through Saturday, April 5 brings a pet rummage sale at the Scottish Rite Center, while Friday, April 4 debuts a new planetarium show at Chemeketa Community College and live music and a Ravel concerto by the Salem Philharmonia Orchestra are set for the weekend. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Highway 99W between Monmouth and Dallas was closed Wednesday morning after a two-alarm house fire broke out at 7:43 a.m. at a home just off the highway as Polk County Fire District crews responded quickly, containing the fire and rescuing several pets though one pet remained missing — drivers were directed to use a detour via Clow Corner, Riddell and Hoffman Roads. - ➤ Salem galleries and museums host a range of April art events — including exhibitions celebrating spring blooms, local fashion history and young artists’ work. Visitors can enjoy free events like the Salem Art Walk on April 4 and Slow Art Day on April 5 and attend additional lectures and gallery openings across the city. Salem Reporter

- ➤ Today, the Oregon Community College Association and Chemeketa Community College mark National Community College Month to highlight the role of Oregon’s 17 community colleges in offering affordable education and workforce training. Chemeketa serves 18,000 students at multiple campuses and will showcase programs on social media throughout April — inviting locals to learn more about these vital educational opportunities. 1430 KYKN
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, Oregon DEQ announced it will add six PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) to its list of hazardous substances to better control pollution and cleanup efforts. The commission will vote on adopting the new rules on or after May 21 to help limit exposure from sources like firefighting foam and industrial sites. Oregon Capital Chronicle

- ➤ Salem city officials said today that the deputy city manager position will be eliminated after Scott Archer leaves on April 11 as part of cost-cutting measures amid a nearly 14 million budget deficit. The steps include reducing overtime, curtailing travel and supply purchases plus a draft budget to be released on April 9 with further changes pending a May property tax vote. Salem Reporter
