COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CERT training will begin on Thursday, April 24 at the Salem Fire Department Training Division at 2740 25th Street SE—where volunteers learn to assist during emergencies—and will continue each Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. until June 5, excluding the week of Memorial Day. The program will conclude on Saturday, June 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon with final graduation exercises.  1430 KYKN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • WalletHub ranked Salem 30th on its list of best state capitals to live in in 2025. The study found that Salem did best in economic well-being—ranking 14th with low foreclosure and underemployment rates—but it posted average scores in affordability and quality-of-life.  Statesman Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A free emergency preparedness course will begin on April 24 at Fire Station #6 in West Salem — the six-week series runs from 6-9 p.m. and requires preregistration with Lola Hackett. Mark Wardell, the West Salem CERT leader, shared his personal reasons for joining the team and urged neighbors to prepare for disasters — reminding everyone that knowing each other can make a difference when emergencies strike.  Salem Reporter
