- ➤ Salem began testing its water connection to Keizer's drinking water system yesterday and will continue until Monday — officials said about 5 million gallons per day will be pumped and West Salem residents might notice a slight change in water taste, odor, and color — as the intertie helps supplement the city's water supply. Statesman Journal
- ➤ The state awarded an $800,000 grant to the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency to begin a program that will send people released from prison or the state hospital straight to a shelter — where they can access mental health care. The agency will work with local prison systems to plan next steps and hire a program manager for the pilot. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Amtrak withdrew 70 Horizon train cars for emergency repairs due to corrosion—leaving the Cascades service with only one working train connecting Salem, Portland and Seattle. Substitute bus service was offered for affected passengers until Amtrak redistributes other cars and a replacement plan is announced. Salem Reporter
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On March 13th, a bipartisan bill called Tensy’s Law passed the Senate Health Care Committee and now heads to the Ways and Means subcommittee for a hearing—if approved, Medicaid will pay parents for caring for children with severe disabilities. Supporters say the new fiscal analysis shows costs of about $20.5 million to $35 million a year—much lower than earlier estimates—and hope lawmakers will back the proposal to help over 1,500 families.
