COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eight volunteer veterinarians and local nonprofits will offer low-cost pet vaccines and microchips for cats and dogs at the Scottish Rite Center, 4090 Commercial Ave. S.E., on Sunday, March 30 starting at 11 a.m. and going until 1 p.m.—unsheltered pet owners and those with government assistance receive free services while others pay $25 for vaccines or $37 for dog licensing, with free pet supplies and nail trimming available while supplies last.  Salem Reporter
  • A report by the Mid-Willamette Valley Homeless Alliance found that Gov. Tina Kotek’s January 2023 order helped shelter 600 households in Marion and Polk counties and add over 200 beds across eight facilities including a new ARCHES Nest at 2933 Center St. N.E. in Salem—state funds also supported projects like Church at the Park’s micro shelter and expansions at Catholic Community Services and United Way’s SafeSleep shelter.  Salem Reporter

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight candidates have filed to run for four Salem-Keizer School Board seats in the May 20 election as voters choose between two opposing slates. One slate led by Community for Salem-Keizer Schools backs candidates with education experience while the other, promoted by Marion — Polk First, favors candidates with business and law enforcement ties; the winners will start their four-year terms on July 1.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon's legal settlement fund ended fiscal year 2023 with only 16% funding instead of the required 70% — rising claim costs and larger legal settlements have pushed the fund toward bankruptcy. Governor Tina Kotek proposed a $120 million increase in risk fund payments in the current session as critics urge lawmakers to act swiftly.  Salem Reporter
  • Salem homeowners who are seniors or disabled can apply by April 15 for a program that pays their current year property taxes with repayment at 6% interest. The program paid over $11.5 million in 2024 for more than 3,800 eligible homeowners—applicants must have lived in their homes for 5 years and meet income and value limits, and late applications with a fee are accepted until December 1.  1430 KYKN
  • Oregon lawmakers plan to expand a program that charges electric vehicle drivers per mile—OReGO—to help fund road repairs. Electric car owners pay less in taxes than gas car drivers because they do not pay the gas tax.  Salem Reporter
