CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Salem man (41) accused in January of throwing Molotov cocktails at the local Tesla dealership now faces federal charges for two counts of attempted arson and unlawful possession of a destructive device after evidence linked him to the incident, with a court appearance set for April 3. - ➤ Authorities reported that Adam Mansour, 40, was found unresponsive in his cell at Marion County Jail around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday and died despite emergency efforts—officials are still investigating the cause of his death. Salem Reporter

- ➤ On Monday the famous Akebono cherry trees reached peak bloom at the Oregon State Capitol—drawing visitors who enjoyed the blossoms that typically last for about two weeks. Statesman Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Advocates marched for affordable child care and better family support at the State Capitol in Salem on Tuesday. Groups including the Oregon Working Families Party, Child Care for Oregon Coalition, and Family Forward led the rally with chants like 'care can't wait.' Statesman Journal
- ➤ Salem officials removed the word—livability—from information about the local option levy for May 20 after the Oregon Secretary of State advised that the term is too subjective under Safe Harbor rules. Some local critics, including former state librarian Jim Scheppke, argued the change could hurt voters’ understanding of how parks, libraries and Center 50+ would benefit the community. - ➤ Salem City Council voted Monday to ratify a sale agreement for a 0.94-acre property on Market Street NE that will be used to build affordable housing for low-income families — the purchase, set at $750,000, will use federal grant funds to expand local housing options. - ➤ A county judge blocked Gov. Tina Kotek's December order that required state agencies to use union labor on most building projects—contractors argued that only the Legislature can change bidding rules. The March 31 deadline is on hold while the court reviews the lawsuit. Salem Reporter
- ➤ On March 13, a bipartisan bill called Senate Bill 538—Tensy’s Law—cleared the Senate Health Care Committee to allow Medicaid to pay parents for caring for children with severe disabilities, and it now heads to the Ways and Means Committee to decide if its lower cost estimates will be in the new budget. Lawmakers reported that revised figures show costs of about $20.5 million per year at first rising to around $35 million later, easing expense concerns. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Public records show Council President Linda Nishioka considered suing Mayor Julie Hoy after she felt misled into prompting City Manager Keith Stahley’s resignation on Feb 9—she said she felt used and gaslit; city officials later disputed her claims and the resignation was accepted amid confusion over the decision.
