- ➤ Longtime Salem volunteer Dolly Olson—who has served since the early 1980s—received the Silver Antelope award on Feb. 26 for her work with Scouting America directing summer camps and strengthening youth safety. She will travel to Orlando in May to attend the national meeting for the award. Salem Reporter
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 300 people submitted letters in support of the Pause Act, a bill that would stop new Treasury investments in fossil fuel funds if more than 10% of a private equity fund is in such companies. More than 30 letters, including one from the Treasury, opposed the measure as it may reduce returns for PERS retirees (Public Employees Retirement System) during a public hearing held on March 19. - ➤ Salem Reporter will host a Town Hall on April 15 at 6 p.m. at the Elsinore Theatre to explain a proposed property tax levy that will be on the ballot with ballots mailed in late April and voting on May 20. Panelists including Dr. Irvin Brown, Josh Eggelston and Tom Hoffert will present details on the levy—Capital Community Media will broadcast the event live on Channel 21. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Lawmakers are considering House Bill 3166 that would let all registered voters join primary elections and list every candidate on one ballot. The bill requires candidates to get a party endorsement before using a party label and public testimony ends at 8 a.m. today. Statesman Journal
- ➤ Keizer City Council voted 5—2 on Monday to keep the Community Diversity Engagement Committee's name unchanged after residents defended its work at the meeting. The council approved a new action plan for the committee and appointed councilor Soraida Cross as its liaison. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Oregon OSHA acted within its legal authority by adopting stronger safety and health rules for agricultural labor housing—new measures that will take effect March 31. The Oregon DOJ confirmed the rule change under the Oregon Safe Employment Act, clearing doubts about the division’s power to enforce these standards. 1430 KYKN
- ➤ On March 14, Congress passed a budget resolution that cut $85,000 in federal funds from CASA of Marion County, stopping plans to hire a staff member to train volunteer advocates for foster kids. The nonprofit served 166 of 318 children in foster care in 2023 and said the lost funding could have helped reach 30 more children, so it will look for other support (CASA means Court Appointed Special Advocate). - ➤ Marion County’s sheriff’s office delayed releasing the findings from a $32,000 gun violence study—officials met with county commissioners but did not provide a new release date. Salem Reporter
- ➤ Senate Bill 681 (the Pause Act) had its first public hearing on a plan to stop new PERS investments in funds with more than 10% fossil fuel stocks, with nearly 300 letters of support and over 30 letters of opposition including one from the State Treasury. Lawmakers say the law will help meet a net zero goal by 2050 while Treasury officials warned it could limit returns for retirees. Salem Reporter
