COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On March 14, Final Pass Field at East Salem Community Center held a ribbon cutting that celebrated its opening with youth soccer games and community activities (including support from local programs).  Statesman Journal

  • The Corndog Company of Salem is a pop-up food truck serving honey corn dogs in Mid-Valley for a limited time. Local residents can stop by today to experience a sweet twist on a classic treat + enjoy a chat with the friendly team.  Statesman Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Capital Manor residents (all over 70) in West Salem have been rehearsing for over two months to perform a shortened version of 'Fiddler on the Roof' exclusively for residents and families. Directed by Deborah Johansen, the production will include four performances over the next two weeks.  Salem Reporter
  • Cherry Blossom Day is on March 21 at the Capitol Mall with booths and performances, including Taiko drummers + tea ceremony, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can also enjoy Yozakura night viewing from March 21 to April 4, with lantern-lit cherry blossoms each evening.  Statesman Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bird expert Harry Fuller explains that the long-tailed duck is a winter visitor in western Oregon that favors deep freshwater lakes and coastal waters. Local birders can learn more about this elusive species at upcoming Salem Audubon events.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon Housing and Community Services is awarding $1.95 million in capacity building grants to 13 community partners from 2025 to 2027 to expand affordable rental housing statewide. The grants will help tribal, rural, and community-based organizations improve internal systems and foster collaborative solutions (supporting resilient housing ecosystems).  1430 KYKN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Disability Rights Oregon filed a motion in U.S. District Court on Tuesday, Mar. 17 to limit admissions of misdemeanor and low-level felony defendants at Oregon State Hospital to meet a 7-day mandate. Officials say a new law could complicate reducing current wait times.  Salem Reporter
  • Health officials announced that anyone who visited Salem Health Hospital’s emergency department (between 6:10 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Monday, Mar. 16) or Kaiser Skyline Medical Office (between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday, Mar. 13) should contact their provider due to a potential measles exposure.  Salem Reporter
  • Salem Health Hospital's emergency room and Kaiser Permanente Skyline Medical Office (exposure dates Mar. 13 and Mar. 16) were identified by the Oregon Health Authority as potential measles exposure sites, and visitors are advised to contact their health care providers.  Statesman Journal
