CULTURE NEWS

  • Roger Tofte, creator of the Enchanted Forest theme park south of Salem, died peacefully Feb. 13 at age 96 with family by his side. Three generations of his family continue to run the park, and a celebration of life will be announced soon.  Statesman Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A weather system is forecast to bring 30–40 inches of snow to Cascade Mountain passes (Feb. 16–20) and light flurries to the Willamette Valley (slow start this weekend) that could slow travel on highways 26, 22, and 58.  Statesman Journal
  • Salem’s bald eagles at Minto-Brown Island Park are nearly ready to nest as the city invites volunteers to join the Eagle Watch 2026 program+Salem Park Ranger Mike Zieker said the birds are adding final touches to their nest, and helpers can sign up by March 4.  Salem Reporter

  • Oregon Housing and Community Services earned national recognition in 50 States, 50 Breakthroughs for its innovative ORCA system (a streamlined process that consolidates over 14 funding programs to speed up affordable housing projects).  1430 KYKN

  • Salem’s only youth mental health drop-in center at 246 State St will close soon due to funding cuts by Pacific Source Community Solutions, prompting staff layoffs. Leaders are urging officials and alternative funders to step in before more youth support is lost.  Statesman Journal
