COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week, Salem hosts indoor markets on Saturday at Salem Public Market and Wavra Farms, a Bingo party at the Grand Theatre and Van Halen tribute at Elsinore Theatre on Saturday, plus a Winds show at South Salem High School and a plant workshop at Cristom Vineyards on Sunday.  Salem Reporter
  • On Jan. 21, a vehicle hit a utility pole in South Salem, causing about 1,700 homes and businesses to lose power. The Salem Public Library evacuated its main branch while PGE estimated power would return by about 3:30 p.m.  Statesman Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers advanced a bill to replace the Quality Education Model (27-year-old system) with a new funding approach that relies on expert research and educator panels. The proposal will be debated over the next month during the legislative session beginning Feb. 2.  Salem Reporter
  • Cindy Flores, Salem-Keizer School District's first dedicated mariachi teacher, will host a statewide festival at McKay on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring mariachi groups from across Oregon and expert musicians (from Las Vegas).  Salem Reporter

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Harry Fuller of Salem Audubon says that warmer winters now let hummingbirds stay in our valley all year—Anna’s hummingbirds can be seen year-round while Rufous and Allen’s visit during the warm months. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marion County Health & Human Services and the Salem Fire Department launched the REACH team yesterday at Fire Station 1 to address behavioral health and social needs. The pilot (with new vehicles seen since Jan. 20) will track key metrics for six months.  1430 KYKN
  • The Oregon Department of State Lands updated its ADV Program to remove abandoned boats that pollute waterways and harm water quality. Law changes took effect on Sept. 26 — streamlined vessel disposal and a $1M grant from BoatUS now support cleanup efforts statewide.  1430 KYKN
