CULTURE NEWS

  • Willamette Art Center reopens Monday, Jan. 5 in its new southeast Salem studio near the airport. The nonprofit will resume low-cost ceramics classes and open studio time (adding 1,500 sqft of space) after six months of renovations.  Salem Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salem-Willamette Valley Airport lost its federalization on Dec. 30 and will now operate as a general aviation facility; TSA screening equipment remains on site but may be relocated. Local leaders allocated $300,000 on Oct. 13 and combined it with $1.2 million in community funds to help attract a new airline.  Statesman Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu cases are surging in Oregon as the OHA reports fewer residents are getting vaccinated this season compared to last. Testing from Dec. 21 to 27 shows 15.9% of specimens were positive, with influenza A types H1N1 + H3 detected in 39% and 61% of cases respectively.  Statesman Journal
  • A Sublimity couple welcomed their first baby of 2026 at Santiam Hospital at 1:57 a.m. on New Year's Day — Bowen Minten was born healthy at 8 lbs 5 oz as fireworks echoed outside.  Statesman Journal
  • The Oregon Health Authority offers six practical tips for better health in 2026—quitting tobacco, updating vaccinations for RSV, pertussis, influenza, and COVID-19, eating well, moderating alcohol, and seeking mental health support.
